Nicotinic acid (vitamin B3, niacin) is a naturally occuring organic compound and essential nutrient. It is a precursor of the coenzymes NAD and NADP, which play a role in hydrogen transfer processes including: fat, carbohydrate, protein, and alcohol catabolism; DNA repair; cell signaling; and more. Insufficiency of nicotinic acid leads to nausea, skin and mouth lesions, anemia, headaches, tiredness, and in severe cases the disease pellagra. Medically used in the treatment of pellagra.
